2-day, Mokuhanga Workshop (traditional Japanese woodblock)

Learn the basics of cutting and printing Japanese woodblocks in this 2-part class. The first class will be all about designing, registering and cutting the block. We will discuss tools and other ways you can prepare the wood for printing.  Our second class will discuss papers, making Nori (or purchasing it), how to prime the plate for printing, what a damp pack is, what types of ink are used and how to print your blocks by hand with a barren. All students will be provided with a shina plywood block, tools to use, and the Nori and ink to print with, and some different types of paper to print on.

About the Instructor:

Kelly graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a BFA in studio art, concentration in printmaking, but considers herself a mixed media artist. She has lived in south Florida, Atlanta, Syracuse, NY, and currently resides in Knoxville, Tennessee. Regardless of where she lives she finds a community where she can make art, learn new processes and teach what she is most passionate about. Kelly is currently the director of the Knoxville Arts Center where she enjoys creating programming for the community she lives and teaches in.
