SUMMARY:A foothold\, that is all - OPENING RECEPTION - Judy Rushin-Knopf
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of A Foothold\, That Is All\, a solo exhibition by Chattanooga-based artist Judy Rushin-Knopf. We will be also hosting Open Artist Studios + printmaking demonstrations in the Community Printshop. More details TBA \nA foothold\, that is all\nMeanwhile\, I have found a ledge on which to catch my breath. Working repetitively and\ninstinctively – like breathing – I have produced this group of weavings that represent a\nshift towards a slower practice focused on sustainability\, depth\, and well-being. They\nare a bridge to something I can’t yet identify. \nFor over twenty years I have held seven convictions. They are my compass. \nSeven Convictions\n1.     The time invested in making the work conveys to those willing to invest the\ntime seeing the work\n2.     Repetitive honing by hand may imbue an artwork with more humanity than a\nlarge painterly gesture\n3. Small works are underrated\n4.     You can build something big from small parts (or cover large distances with\nsmall steps)\n5.     Painting is a long process of getting into and out of trouble\n6.     Allowing a work to lean into instability is an affirmation of life\n7.     I am inspired by the prospect of mutual generosity between the artist and\nviewer \n  \nBio\nRushin-Knopf’s work has been featured in numerous gallery and museum exhibitions nationally\nand resides in museum and book art collections including University of Kentucky Art Museum\,\nFlorida State University Museum of Fine Art\, Wofford College Museum of Fine Art\,\nMassachusetts Institute of Technology\, The Frick Fine Arts Library\, Harvard Fine Arts Library\,\nand the Kohler Art Library. She is represented by Ivy Brown Gallery in New York. Rushin-Knopf\nis also a collaborator with Carolyn Henne on the Comma project\, which produces boxed editions\nof small sculptural objects.

SUMMARY:Anika Toro FINDING JOY book release party
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the book release of our very own Resident Studio Artist Anika Toro! The party will be in the community printshop during our opening house event on Friday April 17th from 6-9pm. \nAnika will be present to chat and sign any books\, but more enticing may be acquiring the one-of-a-kind hand-printed material items available with any book sold\, each made by Anika. Visitors will also be encouraged to participate in a fun found text/play with words experience in the printshop that line with the book’s theme. \nFinding Joy: \nDiscover the magic of serendipity and artistic exploration in “Finding Joy”! This mixed media art book takes selections from nine different copies of the same book\, showcasing Anika’s transformative and playful approach to the original text. \nEach page spread uses hand-selected text\, left unaltered from its original position. Through a process of erasure and blackout\, Anika redacts everything except a newly found message\, thought\, idea\, or poem\, without adding any new text. Analog collages\, paint\, photography\, embroidery\, and more celebrate unique narratives\, exploring creativity\, spontaneity\, and the profound moments that emerge from reimagining existing ideas.\n\nAbout Anika:\nAnika Toro is a mixed media artist with a background in photography and collage. Her current work fuses narrative\, serendipity\, and playful experimentation into art that transforms familiar texts and images into unexpected expressions of creativity. Her innovative projects have found homes in hotels and private spaces around the world\, while her award-winning photography has been seen in magazines\, on record covers\, and in exhibitions throughout the United States.

SUMMARY:NURTURING NATURE - Opening Reception - Ty Murray & Jazmin Witherspoon
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday April 17th from 6-9pm for the opening reception of Nurturing Nature: An Afrolachian Prayer\, a collaborative exhibition by Ty Murray & Jazmin Witherspoon. Come celebrate this new show in the gallery with us! \nNurturing Nature: An Afrolachian Prayer is an ekphrastic exploration rooted in Appalachian landscape and Black Femme identity. This duo exhibition by Ty Murray and Jazmin Witherspoon is a photopoetry interpretation of the nature we inherit and the nature we cultivate within ourselves. A dance between what is seen and what is felt\, this exhibit reminds us that we are all animals\, sharing many survival and environmental concerns.  \nThe installation moves the audience from exterior landscape into intimate interior\, reflecting nature’s imprint on the artists. It is a curious offering\, where handwoven textiles\, ceramics\, and wearable art become detours into the wandering mind of an artist.   \nBirthed from a decade-long friendship\, this creative kinship reflects a journey from girlhood into self-defined womanhood through image\, poem\, and object. Murray and Witherspoon cultivate an environment where Blackness is not peripheral to Appalachian narratives\, but central to them\, and where the act of nurturing both embraces and liberates. \nWhat if we emphasized the sacredness of Black womanhood\, like the animals for whom we build sanctuaries? \nPLUS\, in the printshop\, we’ll have a book release party for our Resident Artist Anika Toro‘s newly published book project Finding Joy \nPLUS we’ll have Open Artist Studios featuring the RR Resident Artists and the RR Printshop Members throughout the studio.

SUMMARY:Guen Montgomery "Reasonable Doubts" + Open Studios + Haypeep
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception in the gallery of solo exhibition by Guen Montgomery Reasonable Doubts. \nPLUS we will be hosting Open Artists Studios \n+ Featured Printmaker Sage Perrott HAYPEEP in the Community Printshop! \n_____________________________________________ \nREASONABLE DOUBTS \nMary Oliver told us to let the soft animals of our bodies love what they love. \nWhat if you’re always a minute away from losing the thing your animal body loves? In inferential cognitive behavior therapy\, patients are asked to learn to recognize the difference between reasonable doubts and obsessive doubts. The inferential part of this therapy approach addresses the tendency to make up the wrong story from unreasonable doubts and run away with it. To make faulty inferences. After completing the workbook\, I can assure you that all my doubts are reasonable. \nThis exhibition of recent works by Guen Montgomery privileges feeling and touching: feeling as an affectual state\, the haptic need to feel as orientation\, and as “feeling your way through” – a way of navigating in unsettled times. Touch refers to the touch of ink to paper\, or the longing to touch that comes from seeing an animal’s fur and feeling it resonate with some uncontrollable mammal part of you. Reasonable Doubts is about being a person-animal-mother in the current polycrisis. \nGuen Montgomery \n \nBio \nGuen Montgomery is an artist and performer whose work investigates identity through studies of material culture\, gender\, and family mythology. Montgomery’s work is located in the tactile intersections between printmaking\, performance\, and sculpture. Montgomery has exhibited nationally and internationally and has work in public collections including the Centre for Art and Design in Churchill Australia\, and Mushashino Art University\, Tokyo\, Japan. She’s completed multiple residencies\, including the Vermont Studio Center and Stove Works residencies. Within the last year\, Montgomery has exhibited in solo and two-person exhibitions\, most recently at the Janet Turner Print Museum in Chico\, CA and SNAP Gallery in Edmonton\, Canada. An Assistant Professor of Studio Art at the University of Illinois\, Montgomery lives in Urbana with her wife\, daughter\, a patient dog\, and two elderly cats. \n_____________________________________________ \n \n  \n  \nSage Perrott\, aka Haypeep\, is a printmaker and educator originally from West Virginia. Her artwork features grumpy\, lumpy\, ghost-like creatures situated in cramped\, often humorous circumstances. Perrott especially enjoys screenprinting and riso. She has degrees in printmaking from West Virginia University (BFA) and from Ohio University (MFA). Perrott is currently an Associate Professor teaching printmaking at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City\, TN. Her prints\, drawings\, and zines have found their way into the hands of folks all over the United States and the world. \n

SUMMARY:Queer as Water - Kenzie Wells
DESCRIPTION:Join us First Friday November 7th for our 🚨 last opening of the year! We are thrilled to host the opening reception of the exhibition Queer as Water by Kenzie Wells. \nDuring this event\, we will be hosting our Open Artist Studios with all our Relay Ridge Resident Artists\n✨PLUS✨\nwe will be hosting a pop-up outdoor exhibition of the 2025 Steamroller BIG Prints made during Knox Small Press Fest @knoxsmallpressfest with a few woodblocks on display in the printshop. \nQUEER AS WATER \n \nMy mixed-media practice explores sites of environmental and queer resilience that overturn\nheteronormative social structures. Industrial items such as gates and tires are sculpted into\nconglomerations coated in residues of resin. Found trinkets are fossilized into surfaces\, some forming\nsarcastic\, queer-coded messages. These assemblages subvert capitalistic norms that perpetuate\necological demise\, commenting on how political forces inhibiting LGBTQIA+ rights coincide with\nsocietal shifts toward ecocide. \nIn Long Live Queer Night Life\, Amin Ghaziani outlines underground queer night clubs as utopias where\nsocial structures are reversed: queer folks are in charge. My work engages with the material aesthetics\nfound in these scenes\, exploring the fluidity of nighttime spaces where colored lights illuminate\nglittery surfaces as day shifts to night. \nIn my recent series Queer as Water\, I explore the queer potential of the beach\, referencing it as a\nspace suspended outside social hierarchies\, drawing on Hannah Freed-Thall’s Modernism at the\nBeach. Beach ecologies embody specific textural decay\, visualized through crumbling cement\, pitted\nsurfaces\, and pearlescent growths similar to lichen and barnacles. \nThrough improvisation\, my work engages with the resistant spirit of beaching\, wherein queer folks\ngather in industrial settings. My sculptures tell stories of our watery\, material future through a lens\nthat portrays water as a mystical\, queer force. Through decay and transformation\, my work reflects\nthe playful tenacity embodied by queer communities alongside resistant ecologies. \n__________ \nKenzie Wells (they/them) is a mixed-media sculptor\, fabricator\, and educator currently based in\nWashington\, D.C. They are a lover of all animals\, co-parenting 5 pets with their partner\, and has a\nrobust collection of little-things-found-on-the-ground. Wells has attended the Wassaic Project Artist\nResidency\, Oxbow School of Art and Artists’ Residency\, and Penland School of Craft. They have\nexhibited nationally in galleries\, including: SPRING/BREAK Art Show\, New York\, MoCA Tucson\, The\nUniversity of Arizona Museum of Art\, and Charlotte Street Foundation\, Kansas City\, MO. Originally\nfrom Knoxville\, TN\, Wells received their BFA in 2015 from the University of Tennessee\, and MFA in\n2020 from the University of Arizona.

SUMMARY:Say It Again! Prints of Resistance exhibition
DESCRIPTION:SAY IT AGAIN! Prints of Resistance \nExhibition Dates – October 3 – 25\, 2025 \nOpening Reception – First Friday October 3rd 6-9pm \nJuror: E “Oscar” Maynard of Tender-Heart Press \nHistory can repeat itself\, but when it does\, so too does the resistance and our messages often bear repeating. With printmaking’s reproducibility and paper’s portability and ease of distribution\, prints are the original mass communicator of ideas. Artists have long taken advantage of this process to gain attention and shout our messages through repeated imagery\, text\, and design. \nIn collaboration with Knox Small Press Fest\, the exhibition Say It Again! Prints of Resistance shares with us how printmaking today continues to prevail as a powerful role in resistance. This is a creative call to action to record\, respond\, reflect\, express\, or simply process recent changes in our world affecting both the people and our planet. \nJoin us First Friday October 3rd from 6-9pm for the opening reception of this exhibition PLUS a fun collaborative printmaking demonstrations featuring YOU making your own free print with a message (with our help)! We will also be hosting a poetry reading on the dock outside with the writers and times TBA. \n

SUMMARY:HEARTWOOD - Eric William Carroll & Jessica Greenfield OPENING GALLERY RECEPTION
DESCRIPTION:  \nEric William Carroll (view of process)\nFRIDAY August 15th 6-9pm \nJoin us for an open house event celebrating a new gallery exhibition Heartwood by Eric William Carroll and Jessica Greenfield. Hurricane Helene had a dramatic impact on the people of Southern Appalachia\, as well as the region’s more-than-human inhabitants. As a way to process this traumatic event and connect with their homes in Asheville and Boone\, Jessica Greenfield and Eric William Carroll are collaborating with the trees they share the landscape with. \nCome see the exhibition and meet the artists PLUS we’ll have open artist studios with the RR Resident Studio Artists PLUS Knox Small Press Fest tote designs being printed in the community printshop! \nHEARTWOOD \n\nThe practices of Eric William Carroll and Jessica Greenfield both emerge from a genuine curiosity about the natural world embodied through slow processes and sustained attention. In Heartwood\, they present their collaborations with the trees of Southern Appalachia. Carroll’s cyanotypes are part of his ongoing Field Recordings project where he explores the ideas of climate anxiety and land stewardship through site-specific photographs and temporary installations along the floodplain in Asheville\, NC. The resulting portraits are the visual equivalent of a field recording; abstract yet documentary\, ephemeral yet firmly rooted in a specific time and place. \nGreenfield presents work from her ongoing Oak Shothole Leafminer series\, a collaboration with local oak trees and the tiny shothole leaf miner fly. Every spring the female fly emerges from her larval state with a mouth too small to bite through anything\, so she forms a unique relationship with the oak. With her ovipositor\, which she will soon use to lay eggs\, she pierces the young leaf buds and laps the juice that seeps out. As the leaves grow the pinpricks become a pattern of perfectly formed holes. Greenfield delicately embroiders the leaves to highlight the resilience and creativity of the leafminer. Both artists speak to nature’s resilience in the face of a changing climate and humanity’s entanglement with the natural world. \n\n\nJessica Greenfield

SUMMARY:FIRST FRIDAY - Andrew Godwin "Seeds"
DESCRIPTION:Join us First Friday May 2nd from 6-9pm for our quarterly OPEN HOUSE event! We’ll have a new exhibition Seeds by local artist Andrew Godwin in the Relay Ridge Gallery + OPEN STUDIOS with the RR Resident Studio Artists + Save-an-Old-Oak-Tree Fundraising with dogwood design printing in the printshop \n \nAndrew Godwin uses drawing and painting to explore the connections that exist between all things. \nHis current body of work balances realism and ambiguity so that multiple subjects read simultaneously\, as relatives. Have you ever looked closely inside a snail shell\, a pinecone\, or a sweetgum ball and began to imagine landscapes\, or recognize patterns\, or discover a sensuality you didn’t feel before? It’s like that. \nThe ubiquity ofboth the subject matter (walnuts\, grapes\, seeds) and the means of making (pencil and paper) accentuate the sense of closeness and attention by stripping away all other distractions. Together\, they say “This is a way to see and think about the world around you as a rich\, connected whole.” \nThis philosophical approach to the physical world connects him to other searchers devoted to deeply personal readings of their environments\, from the forest meditations of Thomas Nozkowski to the quotidian revelations of Catherine Murphy and Mary Oliver. \nHis creative practice is heavily influenced by his running practice\, a meditative endeavor including trail runs over thirty miles that allow both immersion in isolated places and a mental and emotional transformation that opens physical experience to metaphysical meaning. \nHe and his partner Susanne Tarovella are the principal architects of Sparkman & Associates Architects\, Inc. in Knoxville\, TN\, where he also taught drawing and design studios at the University of Tennessee from 2005-2019. \n

SUMMARY:FIRST FRIDAY - Abigail Rose Hedley "Sweet Sweat"
DESCRIPTION:Join us first Friday February 7th from 6-9pm for the opening reception of Sweet Sweat by Abigail Rose Hedley @abigail_rose_sculpture \n“Sweet Sweat is an exhibition of wool sculptures that create a space for viewers to reflect on their own soft memories of a summer’s day. Each piece asks the viewer to stop and sit with the work\, allowing your mind to wander and attach itself to its familiar form. The warm white color of the raw wool allows you to finalize the work with your own associations and embed your personal memories into the piece. \nThis body of work was created after the sudden passing of the artist’s partner and shares with the viewer the most tender places of their heart. By sharing their attempts of coming to terms with the pangs of nostalgia and grief associated with this loss\, their goal is to give space for collective sharing. When approaching the work\, you are encouraged to take the time to reflect\, and project your history of life\, love\, and pain into each piece. And if you feel so inclined\, share with those around you.” \n“Cherished Disgust”

SUMMARY:FIRST FRIDAY December 6th PICKLEBALL opening reception - curated by Gina Stucchio
DESCRIPTION:Opening Gallery Reception + Open RR Artists Studios + RR Printshop happenings! \nFIRST FRIDAY  December 6th  6-9pm \nOlivia Tawzer “Sideline Braid” acrylic on canvas\, 40 x 40 inches\, 2023\nJoin us for the opening reception of Pickleball a curated exhibition by Gina Stucchio. \nIt’s hard to feel like things aren’t just shit these days. \nHowever\, in my overwhelming moments of despair and grief I have felt bonded with my friends and surrounding community in ways I never have before. It’s hard to understand when it’s okay to feel happy or to celebrate anything when so much going on around us feels like it’s more important. \nRecently I’ve thought a lot about what ‘home’ is and what it means to me. It took some time\, but I’ve realized that home is where I feel comfortable and safe\, coming together with friends to play sports\, observing the beautiful moments that seem far too fleeting these days\, and sharing a meal made with love with people I love. We’re not biological\, but siblings at heart. New family. We’ve formed a bond over the lacking. When curating this show I brought together a group of artists from different areas of my life who have a common thread that addresses how the idea of ‘home’ includes community and love and being with each other. \n-Gina Stucchio \nExhibiting artists in this Pickleball include Andres Ramirez\, Gina Stucchio\, Olivia Tawzer\, Sarah Musgrave\, and Susie Zadeh.
