Over two days, immerse yourself in the art and craft of bookmaking—from foundational forms to a finished, hand-bound sketchbook. On the first day, participants will explore a range of structures, including folded, stitched, and sewn bindings, to understand how different techniques influence both function and design. Through guided demonstrations and hands-on experimentation, you’ll gain confidence in basic bookbinding methods and tool use, and bring home a variety of sample structures.
On the second day, we’ll bring these skills together to create a personalized sketchbook using the elegant and durable coptic stitch. Participants will hand-craft their own covers, experiment with decorative papers, and bind their pages into a fully functional, lay-flat book ideal for drawing, journaling, or mixed-media work. All materials and tools will be provided, along with templates and resources for future projects.

All materials are provided and all experiences welcomed – must be 18+

Cole Hancock is an MFA candidate of the printmaking program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where they also work as an art teaching associate. They graduated from Florida State University with a BFA in studio art and a concentration in printmaking in 2021. Their practice includes low-budget roadtripping and combining print with paper craft to discuss the nature of our relationship with the land. As an Appalachian-based itinerant artist, they explore the cultural and environmental histories of the land, how preserving something can fundamentally alter it, and how human infrastructure and nature evolve and affect one another.
